The market share of all-electric cars registered in Italy experienced a positive trend over recent years, passing from 0.26 percent in 2018, to 4.6 percent in 2021. To put into perspective the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market in Italy, the number of battery electric cars sold in Italy increased six-fold in just three years.

Recharging matters

Despite a lot of interest about electric cars in Italy, a lack of charging infrastructure has been a hindrance for potential buyers. 60.5 percent of the respondents of a survey reported that one of the main weaknesses of electric cars was the difficulty of finding a charging station.

Other barriers

According to a recent survey, respondents stated that other barriers against choosing an electric car were related to their costs and performance. While electric drivetrains can accelerate light vehicles much quicker than internal combustion engines, limited driving range kept battery electric vehicles under par. In the 2010s, battery range of electric vehicles increased significantly, a crucial development that has opened up the market globally.
